The Summer Creek Bulldogs had a historic season, making it all the way to the state championship game in Dallas. Despite the outcome, that team was led by no other than head coach Kenny Harrison. In the past years Harrison and the bulldogs were not able to get past the 4th round. With the leading skills and coaching level from Harrison and other coaches, Summer Creek was able to make history all year. The man himself also made history for himself, winning multiple awards.
The first award that was announced on Dec 13 was the UIL Coach Of the Year. That award was brung home to the Creek with Coach Harrison winning. Kenny Harrison became the third ever Humble ISD Coach to win this award. On Jan 13 he was also awarded the All Greater Houston Football Coach Of The Year by Houston Chronicle. With the historic run to the state championship and the award winning throughout the season, it is known that Kenny Harrison is one of the top coaches in the state of Texas. Not only one of the best but also one of the toughest coaches. With his background being from Port Arthur, Texas and earning a scholarship from the University of Texas, he runs his program like no other. After this year the whole program has realized it’s all just a mind game, and that if you play it right bigger things will happen. For example, a state championship run.
“Coach Harrison’s coaching skills are not for the weak, but he pulls out the best of you if you push yourself through it,” safety Brandon Jones said.
Jones will be returning for one more year, seeking to make it back to Dallas and finish what they started.
“With the season about to begin and the starting quarterback out, all eyes were on me,” quarterback Blake Thomas said. “At first I was hesitant on it because my main position is wide receiver, it’s what I’ve always done, Coach Harrison made it easier for me to just go out there and play like nothing else matters whether I’m at receiver or quarterback”.
Blake will also be returning for his last year. It is unknown if he will stay at quarterback or go back to receiver.
With all the history, awards, and even comments from his own players, it’s time to hear what the man himself had to say about the winning of his awards.
“Although It is a huge accomplishment and I’m very grateful for it, I don’t want to take the shine from the amount of work these kids put in,” Harrison said. “Without them there would be no award.”
Going into the next year Kenny Harrison and the Bulldogs have their mind on one thing. Will they get the job done? Or sadly fall short again?
