Coach Johnson is the new swim coach and he has come to make his mark. He is dedicated and ready to share his love for his sport with other young swimmers.
As a child his dad put him in swim classes because he felt that it was a necessity to know how to swim. Surprisingly, he became good at the sport and was advised to join a swim club where he learned many skills that helped him grow as a swimmer.
“I’ve been swimming for 15 years and I would love to take my knowledge on swimming and implement it into the swim team,” says Coach Johnson.
Swimming is a sport that builds endurance and muscle strength which means you have to have correct preparation when going into a swim meet or any form of competitive swimming. The most crucial part about swimming is breath control, being able to move through the water without running out of breath is very important because if you do happen to run out of breath it can slow you down quickly.
“Swimming is 85% mental and 25% physical so in order for you to win a race you have to mentally prepare yourself, always ask questions and never be afraid to be bossed,” he said.
Being in a coaching position is all about building positive relationships through communication and active listening while also setting clear expectations for performance and behavior.
“ For the most part my experience so far as a coach has been great but also chaotic for me,” Johnson said. “I have to find the proper way to combat my personality with theirs, but I am here to engage and create a safe and comfortable environment for my students.”
