Senior makes history as first female Bulldog diver to qualify for state

Senior Maya Williams traded leotards for Speedos. And now she’s experiencing the same success in the water as she did on the floor.
After winning first place at districts and finishing second at regionals, Williams is set to compete at the UIL 6A State Swimming and Diving Championship on Feb. 17. The meet will take place at the University of Texas at Austin.
Williams describes the moment she found out she was advancing to the state meet as “so hard to put into words.”
“It was absolutely amazing,” Williams said. “I was surrounded by all my friends and teammates, jumping up and down.”
Before Williams started diving, she was a competitive gymnast for 13 years. She describes the transition between sports as being “easier than expected,” in part thanks to the support of Coach Amanda Christian.
“[Coach Christian] has been very supportive [in] helping learn the difference between diving and gymnastics,” Williams said.
Christian has been impressed by Williams’ talent and work ethic.
“She’s amazing, she’s absolutely amazing,” Christian said. “She got herself to this point. She shows up and works hard every day.”
Williams plans to continue training hard in the time leading up to state.
“I will be extra focused [and am] hoping I can end my season strong,” Williams said.
