A lot of movies came out this summer, like a lot. The summer is the time of the blockbuster so of course there were a lot of them. I already talked about Barbie in my last review so this is a MEGA REVIEW! I’m reviewing five movies that came out this summer, most of them absolutely amazing, the rest of them disappointing, let’s get started though.
First up, maybe the best movie of the summer, definitely the best animated movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It is the sequel to one of the best animated movies of all time and it did not disappoint whatsoever. There’s so much to talk about so lighting round. Animation is absolutely beautiful, has some of the best characterization I’ve ever seen in an animated movie, and has an absolutely amazing message with it. It also has a perfectly threatening villain in the form of Miguel O’Hara, voiced perfectly by Oscar Issac. Oh my gosh he is so good in the role. There are also a ton more Spider-People like Spider-Man India and Spider-Punk, both immediate fan favourites, especially the latter. Besides the action of course, the other best part is that soundtrack. HOLY COW IT IS SO GOOD! Even if you haven’t seen the movie, first what are you doing, go watch it this instant, but like go listen to the soundtrack too, IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Whole movie, 10/10!
Next up, the most disappointing movie for me, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. I am a huge fan of Indiana Jones, like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is my favorite movie of all time but this movie was just not amazing. It’s not absolutely terrible but it’s just not great. The main thing is that Harrison Ford is 80 years old and way too old to be playing an action hero. The best scene in the movie is the opening when another actor is playing a deaged Indiana Jones, it is just classic Indiana Jones. After that, things turn just alright. The new main character played by Phoebe Waller Bridge is alright, I think she’s meant to mirror Indy at the beginning of his journey in Temple of Doom, but it’s just kind of weird and she’s not super likable. The villain is alright, he isn’t the best Indiana Jones villain, but he also isn’t the best. The main takeaway from this movie though is that they probably shouldn’t have made it because Harrison Ford is so old but for what they made, I didn’t hate it. Probably a 6/10.
I’ve got to bring the highlights of the summer back though so let’s get into one of my personal favorites, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Pt 1, long title I know but it is a really good movie. The Mission Impossible movies, especially the last couple, are well known for their action and stunts and this one doesn’t disappoint. They drove a mini Cooper through Rome basically, Tom Cruise drove a motorcycle off a cliff and parachuted off, and they built and destroyed a train by throwing it off a bridge, it was amazing. The movie has a bit of a weird plot but it’s still really cool and well put together with well done tension and high stakes. There’s also a couple new additions to the cast like Pom Klementieff as Paris, a mysterious assassin who is crazy but incredibly fun and Hayley Atwell as Grace, a pickpocket who gets caught up in the plot of the movie. They’re both really cool and I’m really curious to see where their places in these movies will go in the future because they had good roles in this movie. It is also of course only Part 1 so I can’t wait till next year to see the conclusion.
Next unfortunately is another disappointment, The Flash, a movie that when I think about it more, the more I dislike it. Of course, there was everything with Ezra Miller and whatever they did and that greatly affected how many people went to see it, especially because they play two main roles in the movie. The CGi and visual effects aren’t great either which kind of bogs it down but it wasn’t that big of a problem for me personally. The 3rd act and ending is kind of messy too and is confusing especially thinking about James Gunn’s reset of the DCEU. I guess if I had to talk about good parts though, Sasha Calle was pretty cool as Supergirl for the parts she was in and it was cool to see Michael Keaton back in the Batman costume. The movie was also surprisingly kind of emotional, I teared up a bit at the end, I didn’t want to spoil it but yeah, it got kind of emotional. It also has a kind of fun opening scene, I’m a little bit mixed on it to be honest but it still had some cool beats to it. In all, it’s probably another 6/10, you can probably skip it.
Last but certainly not least, is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem which is easily the second best animated movie to come out this summer. Finally the turtles are played by teenagers and they absolutely nail it, like they genuinely just act like teenagers if they fought crime and it’s hilarious. I laughed so much, I was probably a nuisance to the other people in the theater, it was an absolutely hilarious movie. Other than the teenagers, it also has a great voice cast. For example, Jackie Chan as Splinter and Ice Cube as the main antagonist, Superfly, who by the way has “Wake Up in the Sky” as an intro song basically and it was absolutely spectacular. The movie also has some really great action scenes, also accompanied with some great music and with absolutely stellar animation. Also, though it would probably be benefitted by a longer runtime, it is a tight 90 minute movie so seriously if you are bored on a weekend looking for something to watch, it comes to digital in September or just go watch it in theaters because it is completely worth your time. 10/10!
I think that’s it for my summer movie wrap up, unfortunately I didn’t see Oppenheimer, so all of you Chris Nolan fans, my apologies. I hope you enjoyed the review and hopefully got some motivation to go check out some of these movies. Also go check out some other articles on here because everyone is doing incredible! Anyway, have a great day everyone and make sure to be back next week for another movie review!
