Kids looking around in a circle watching eagerly at a teenager reading to them. This is what happened on Oct. 19 when the Starlettes went to read to elementary school kids. They went to Fall Creek, Autumn Creek, Centennial, Summerwood, Ridge Creek, Groves, and Lakeshore. They read to students ages 5, 6, 7, and 8. This is a part of the few service projects that they do every year.
“I believe that Starlettes reading books to elementary children helps the community by making connections and building relationships,” Sophomore Alina Williams said. “This activity also helps kids in the community become more engaged with books.”
Each year the Starlettes go to the same schools, and they continue to read books from the assistant director Stevendy King’s old library from when she was a Kindergarten teacher. This makes a lasting impact on the students, starlettes, and community. The kids have told the Starlettes that they remember them reading the year before, and sometimes even the same books.
“I think it’s important to teach kids what role models are,” Sophomore Soren Sloan said. “And what it looks like to grow up and give back to the community, so they can understand how important that is in the world.”
