Summer Creek Cross Country has had an extremely impressive season. They have achieved many accomplishments such as winning the 2023 21- 6A district national championship. However, that is no surprise because at Summer Creek they hold true to their motto: “The Best Is The Standard.” Adding to their accolades, Cross Country Star junior Michael Menke was recently named the Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week.
“This has been the best team all around from freshman to varsity that we’ve had in school history since we’ve been here in 2009,” Cross Country Coach, Shelton Ervin said. “Two guys qualifying for the state meet: Michael Menke with a top 10 finish and having a freshman Da’Juan Allison qualify for the state meet is pretty huge.”
SCHS Cross country season has been awesome this year and Coach Ervin definitely is proud. This brings the excitement for their upcoming post-season and how they’re going to come into playoffs blazing. They have accomplished so many achievements this season and this is all due to the hard work and dedication that the runners have put in.
“Running is really hard and not a lot of people can do it,” Junior Michael Meneke said. “I mean a lot of people just hate to think about it. So just to think that not only can I do it but to also be one of the best at it is really what inspires me to run.”
Michael Menke is an extraordinary runner that was named “Athlete of the Week” in the Houston Chronicle. However, Michael isn’t stopping there, his goals go way farther. He plans to take this long term and to see himself in his future running at a collegiate level. Although he is only a junior, he sees his future bright and clear.
“This is pretty amazing,” Ervin said. “He surpassed the greatest distance runner that we’ve had in school history, a guy named Jake Boots, he was the school record holder in all distance racing. Mikey as a junior has surpassed all the marks that Boots has put up. He’s pretty dynamic in what he’s done. Especially as an individual that only started as a freshman.”
