Introducing a groundbreaking milestone in education: the inaugural dual credit Criminal Justice course at Summer Creek, a first in Humble ISD history!
Dual credit courses at Summer Creek are in partnership with San Jacinto College, Lone Star College and UT Austin’s OnRamps initiative. These courses give students access to experience college level work while gaining college credit, advanced learning, further exploration of students’ interests and competitive college admissions.
The law doesn’t change and the same goes for Criminal Justice courses. Enrollment into Intro to Criminal Justice will present students with an overview of topics such as law enforcement, court systems, corrections and their different functions. Court Systems and Practices takes students through the inner workings of the court, dealing with criminal law and civil law. Each course will also be visited by guest speakers, being judges, attorneys, DPS officers, detectives and even Summer Creek alumni.
The curriculum will be provided by San Jacinto College over the summer.
Dr. Smith began his career in Criminal Justice working for Brazoria County Community Supervision and Corrections Department for five and a half years, which provided a plethora of knowledge on victims, court practices and rehabilitation.
While Dr. Smith’s Dual Credit Criminal Justice course has been a lingering idea since 2005, his efforts came full circle when his Dual Credit Course was brought to the School Board and approved in December 2023.
“It’s like winning a championship…Just pure joy and excitement.” Dr. Smith expressed. “This is everything I’ve been trying to achieve and it’s not for me, it’s for our students, our community.”
His further outlines for the course include a field trip to the National Institute of Forensic Science.
Dr. Smith is a firm believer that if he can do it, anyone can. In his own words, “I want everybody to have a chance to offer Dual Credit for what they do, because we are the experts in our fields.” As educational opportunities continue to evolve, seize the chance to benefit from these advancements during your high school journey. Dr. Smith concludes with a message of encouragement: “Go for everything and do more. Go for your dreams, don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do.”
