Months of preparation will come to a head as local FFA students get ready to showcase their livestock at the Humble Rodeo Livestock Show. With the performances taking place the first week of February, students come together and share their experience.
“I will be competing with my goat in the Humble Livestock show, we have different divisions by weight and then at the end if you get top three, you can compete again to make it to the auction,” junior Alexa Alcala said.
Alexa has been in FFA all three years and competed in the show last year.
“My goal is to auction and sell my animal again,” Alcala said.“I sold my goat last year and I believe I can do it this year.”
Other students are competing with their own animals as well. Senior Hailey Dowell shares how she prepares.
“We have to check up on our animals twice a day, mornings and afternoons. We run and walk a couple laps around the barn, then go into the show ring. I’m upping the feed and adding more nutrients to get it where I want it before show,” she said. ”Since we are so close to the livestock date, we’ve been doing more practices with our teacher, with everyone at the barn.”
The FFA program provides students with a great opportunity to branch out into the world of agriculture along with the fun of competing.
“We have created such a great community and it’s a great way to put yourself out there,” Dowell said. “You’re getting to work with animals and build up your experience which will help you in your future career.”
