Tennis team makes history as bi-district champs
October 25, 2022
Summer Creek’s tennis team represents the classic story of an underdog. It was only a few years ago that the now bi-district champions had a varsity team composed of students whose only requirement was to hold a racket. As said by their head coach, Jacob Castillo, “I’m very proud of them. They’ve come such a long way.”
Last week, they faced countless schools in bi-district playoffs battling for a regional spot. It is thanks to the absolute commitment and sweat these players put into their game as well as Coach Castillo’s and Coach Selton’s dedication that placed these players on a path SCHS has yet to trek on.
“I think this team has really come together as far as them relating to each other and motivating each other. And, I think that’s what’s bringing us to the point we are today,” Coach Castillo said.
The road to the championship is tumultuous but a drive remains out on the courts: to win. As many wins as it takes and as many wins as possible, Summer Creek High School’s tennis team will continue carving their own way to success, making history along the way.
When asked what he’d say to his team, Castillo had many words.
“I know it’s hard to balance the academics with the athletics,” he said acknowledging the effort it takes being at the courts while putting in personal practice as well. “The other part of that is just congratulations on a great season. This is something that we’ve never done before at the 6A level for Summer Creek tennis. Congratulations to all of them.”
Great job to everyone apart of the tennis program, the coaches and their love for the players as well as the hard working students with love for the game. Thank you to the tennis team for being something to be proud of. Although the Bulldogs fell in the playoffs against Clear Creek, our tennis team remains bi-district champions.
