Summer Creek Playhouse to host Poetry Slam

Kamryn ONeil, Reporter

On Nov. 5, there will be a district-wide Poetry Slam for all high schoolers in Humble ISD at Summer Creek in the Performing Arts Center. There are only 30 spots, so anyone interested should write a poem (PG-13), scan the QR code, and pick if they want to perform. The wonderful students of the Summer Creek theatre program will happily perform for anyone with stage fright.

The form gives the option of performing the poem or having a student perform for the writer while giving recognition. The writer may remain anonymous as well. If poems are not a student’s thing, but they’d like to participate, students have others options, such as doing a prose, spoken word, balladry and rap. This will be a safe space for student to express themselves and their creativity.

Senior Lily Primeaux, who has been in theatre since she was 8 or 9 years old, had the idea to have the Poetry Slam. The Summer Creek Playhouse is hosting the event under the supervision of Ms. Jillian Johnson.

“My inspiration for the poetry slam actually came from the book On Beauty,” said Primeaux who will also be performing in the slam with her own poem called An Ode to a Broken Shot Glass.

The Poetry Slam will be held at 7 p.m. and entrance is free. The main objective is to have something that could connect the community. Ms. Johnson and Primeaux are excited to see the turn out and the creative students across the district.
