Affleck’s Flicks: Halloween

Cayden Affleck, Reporter

As I hope everyone knows who’s reading this article, I’ve been writing horror movie reviews and discussions all month, and since October is coming to a close, the spookiest of all holidays grows nearer. So of course, for Halloween, I’m reviewing Halloween but not just Halloween, I’m doing Halloween too. That’s right, I’m doing Halloween and Halloween thanks to whoever named this movie. For those who are confused, I’ll be reviewing Halloween released in 1978 and Halloween released in 2018 for a special double-feature review for the best holiday ever.

For those who don’t know what the Halloween movies are, they’re about a probably paranormal guy named Michael Myers who attacks the town of Haddonfield, Illinois, every Halloween. The thing about Michael though is that he’s incredibly covert. You won’t even notice him behind you. He’s like a serial killer Batman. People think he’s in the shadows, but actually, he is the shadows, that’s why he’s also called just the Shape.

Alright, now onto the actual review part. The biggest part of both of these movies is extremely effective in building suspense. You always know Michael is probably going to pop out of somewhere, but you’re honestly never completely sure. I already knew a ton about these movies before I watched them and still even though I know what’s coming, it’s still kind of stressful. I would recommend not watching or reading anything with spoilers about these movies before you watch them because it makes them better to watch. Another great thing about these movies is that they have really good characters, mainly Michael Myers, the murderous psychopath, and Laurie Strode, the babysitter who has to help take him down. Both are really good, well-written, well-acted characters and Michael doesn’t even have any lines. Laurie is especially a standout in Halloween (2018) as she’s sort of a survivalist, she’s full-on home-aloned her house after the first movie’s events traumatized her. Also, like any good slasher, Michael Myers has a really “unique” way of sending people to the afterlife. Again, I won’t go into details but these movies go to some crazy places, like, it’s insane. Another thing is that neither of these movies is over two hours long so they’re easy to watch if you are alright with horror movies.

All of those were pros about these movies, but for cons, there are still a couple of them. Some characters will make extremely dumb decisions so if that angers you, be warned. Other characters are just such complete jerks, to an unfathomable point sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense. Those are my two main issues with the movie because they’re just hard to get past sometimes.

Two last things. One, the first Halloween is one of the most important horror movies of all time. It started the slasher genre of horror movies, and without it, we wouldn’t have people like Jason, Freddy, Leatherface, and yes, the leprechaun (look it up). Also, there are a ton of Halloween movies, but you can just watch these two movies and it makes complete sense. They takes place in their own timeline, so no confusion there. Don’t get me started on the other timelines though.

That’s everything I wanted to say about these movies, I think, but I did want to say one last thing. I would like to say thank you to everyone who reads these articles because it’s good to think that there are people who read these. I would also like to thank Mrs. Wood, the adviser of this newspaper, for giving me a place to share my opinions on movies. This was a really great first month altogether so thank you to everyone. Also, I’ll leave my email here for anyone who may be interested in sending me movie suggestions.

Again thanks everyone and Happy Halloween!
