The track and field season has officially begun. Today, Friday, Feb. 10, Pearland High School will host the season-opening meet for the girls’ varsity track and field team (John Morris lll Invitational). The Woodlands High School will host the opening competition for the boy’s varsity track and field team on Saturday, Feb. 18. (The Woodlands Invitational).

The Bulldogs have been putting in a lot of effort off-season in preparation for this.

“We’ve been practicing every day after school and practiced during the summer. We’ve also had speed and strength camps and summer track to prepare us,” said junior Madilynn Reilly.

For boys, track and field coach Ervin said, “ The guys have been working hard weight room-wise. We’ve been doing what we do best. The program and system that is in place usually are composed of having a good fall and training and getting stronger in the weight room and getting closer as a team to be prepared for the challenges of competing from February through May. Which is a long stretch of the competition season.”

The athletes here at Summer Creek have been putting in a lot of work this offseason, which has made them grow stronger in many areas. Many of them have new goals they want to achieve this season.

“Beating my previous PR is my number one goal and also placing better in the district than last time,” said junior Saj Gunner.

Some goals also consist of, “staying strong, being a leader, continuing to work hard in workouts, and hitting 48 for the 400 and 155 for the 800,” said senior Logan Todd.

Each team sets individual and collective goals for itself. It’s a good thing that our Bulldogs cooperate to improve one another.

“The guys have a lot of individual goals they would like to achieve, especially the senior class of 2023. Ultimately I would like to see that class go all out, on top, and have the success they planned. Also ultimately to grow as a program, if there are areas and weaknesses we need to focus on, we need to get better at them. We can fill in those and make those strengths and continue to do what we’re good at,” said Coach Ervin.

Senior Jaylen Mays has put in a lot of effort during the offseason by lifting a lot of weights and practicing explosive movements for field events. In addition, Jaylen wants to reach 60 feet in the shot put and win at state this year. In order to ensure that his name appears on the record board and that he and his team advance to the state tournament, Brian Martinez has been working diligently and regularly during the offseason.

We wish our bulldogs luck in the upcoming track and field season and hope that their efforts will be rewarded.
