I’m a huge superhero fan and enjoy most superhero movies. I’m glad to say that Blue Beetle is on that list because it’s really good!
The best way I can describe Blue Beetle is a superhero origin story with a couple unique touches. I know the trailers didn’t look great. I watched them too and it didn’t look amazing. Kind of cheesy or cheap, but I assure you it’s actually pretty good.
A basic plot for the movie is Jaime Reyes is a college graduate who after returning home, gains a suit and superhuman powers from a scarab that attaches itself to his back. He then must stop an evil businesswoman named Victoria Kord with the help of her niece and his family.
The main thing that makes the movie for me is its themes and message. It mainly focuses the meaning of family and that’s something that always hits me. It is so much more of an emotional movie than I thought it would be. Like to be completely honest, I cried. There were so many moments that were just so emotional, specifically between Jaime and his father, and it just really worked for me.
All the performances are really good too, which really affects the emotional parts. Xolo Maridueña absolutely nails it as Jaime, George Lopez is really great as his uncle, and the two main villains, Victoria Kord and Conrad Carapax have great performances from Raoul Trujillo.
There’s other parts of the movie that are awesome too. The comedy is pretty good and lands most of the time. There might be a couple of jokes that don’t land as well but they are largely outweighed by the good ones.
The action is also really fun. The scarab allows Jaime to use plenty of different kinds of weapons like swords, sonic blasters and giant hammers. There is a huge variety. The secondary villain, Conrad Carapax, has similar abilities but the action scenes are still done in an interesting way.
Speaking of other characters, this movie has a lot of references to other DC characters that we haven’t seen yet like the other two Blue Beetles, Dan Garret and Ted Kord, the latter of which is far more focused on though. I hope at least Ted shows up in the DCU, but anyway.
There are still some light cons to the movie though. I think the first act feels really slow, but that might just be because most of those scenes were in the trailer. The CGI can look kind of spotty at times but I honestly don’t have any big problems with it.
All in all, though it’s a really great movie and if you think you even might enjoy it, you should definitely watch it. For me, it’s a 9/10 because it’s really great and definitely the best DC movie this year so far. Anyway that’s it for the review, make sure to check out the other articles on the Creekside, and have a great day!
