So I’m taking European History this year and when choosing a movie for this week, that class was on my mind. I was thinking about good movies that involve history and I eventually landed on one that is certainly bodacious, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure!
It’s about two friends, Bill S Preston Esquire and Ted “Theodore” Logan, who are the two members of a band called the Wyld Stallions. They have a history report due in one day. They’re super unprepared until a man from the future arrives in a time traveling phone booth and offers them it to finish their report. They then use it to travel throughout time and pick up famous historical figures but still have to get back in time to their presentation.
That’s kind of a long explanation but it’s probably the easiest way I could do it.
I really like this movie for a lot of things, but the funniest part by far is Bill and Ted. They are so incredibly stupid, it’s hilarious. For those who haven’t seen the movie, they talk using words like “radical,” “bogus,” and especially “excellent.” They are classic 80s skater dudes. Also despite having a band, they don’t know how to play any instruments which is insane.
I should also mention that Bill and Ted are played by Alex Winter, who’s now mostly known for television directing, and Keanu Reeves, known for small time movies such as The Matrix, John Wick, and of course, A Walk In The Clouds. They honestly make this movie because they are so good at being Bill and Ted, it’s crazy. I know some people think Keanu Reeves is a bad actor, but I have no idea how because he is so EXCELLENT at this role.
The other great part of the movie is the historical figures and seeing their interactions with each other during the different decades they go to. Seeing Napoleon go down a water slide and Joan of Arc hijacking an aerobics class are just amazing scenes.
There’s also the future where their entire society is based on Bill and Ted and they live by the phrase, “be excellent to each other and party on dudes.”
I feel like I’m spoiling too much, so I’m gonna slow down a bit. Another perk of this movie is that it’s only an hour and a half, tight 90, so you can watch it fast.
Now I do understand how some might not like this movie and to that I say, do you not like fun, do you not like to laugh, do you not like to relax? It is a perfectly fun movie and trust me it is one of the best ways to spend 90 minutes of your time. But if you take one thing from this review, remember to be excellent to each other and party on dudes, 8.5/10.
