As some of you may know, this week is National Suicide Prevention Week but the entire month of September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This is a really good opportunity to bring awareness to a big problem in the world today, especially amongst teenagers so what I want to do here is list some good ways to talk about these problems if you have them.
The first one that comes to mind is talking to a trusted friend or your family. Your friends may be the people who are in the most similar situation to you and your family may be the people who know you the best so they would be some of the best groups to talk to.
A trusted teacher, mentor, or coach is a really good person to talk to too because they know you in a different way from other people and probably know how to deal with situations like that in those specific fields.
Another good outlet is calling a hotline. On the back of our IDs, there’s a number for a the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis textline which are both really good ways to talk about it.
Then there’s probably the most qualified person, a therapist. I know some people are weary about doing therapy because of previous experiences or things you’ve heard but I can assure you that if you need help, they want to help you through whatever is going on.
The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to go through whatever you’re going through alone, there’s always someone that wants to help, no matter what. You’re stronger than you think, have a great week.
