After months of preparation and long practices in the heat, Summer Creek Drum Line placed first in their division at the Aldine Drumline Roundup on Sept. 9.
This contest event was a regional competition with groups ranging from South Houston all the way to Austin. Thirteen other schools competed against the Summer Creek Drumline, but the Bulldogs ultimately secured a victory. Lots of time and hard work were put into pulling off this win. The drumline practices almost eight hours a week to refine their skills. Mr. Glen Buecker, the assistant band director, oversees percussion.
“We start in the summer,” Buecker said. “Then once it’s the beginning of August we can start doing drills. We’ve been working on it since July at least.”
The music performed at the Aldine Drumline Roundup needed to be polished because this contest was a new experience for the marching band.
“This is the first year we’ve ever done this,” said Cameron Cervenka, in reference to the Aldine Drumline Roundup. Cervenka plays the tenor drum and is a current senior in marching band. “It was very difficult, but we’re very happy with what we did.”
Cervenka has been involved in band all four years of high school, along with senior drumline captain Justin Smeya.
“It’s definitely an experience,” Smeya remarked as he recounts his time in band. “It gets stressful at times. But the work really pays off.”
Overall, Summer Creek Marching Band is starting the year off strong with their drumline victory and is excited for the school year. Buecker remarks on his hopes for the future of the department.
“The program is growing, so there’s a lot of opportunities to branch out to different areas, to expand what it is that the students get (to) experience,” Buecker said.
In the meantime, the Summer Creek Drumline and the marching band will keep working hard and living up to the school’s motto: The Best is The Standard.
