Summer Creek Bulldogs make school history by advancing to round 5. The game between Hightower can be seen as the Bulldogs most intense game all year. It had fans in the stands and even at home on the edge of their seats biting nails. So what’s so special about this game? Is it the players trash talking? The comeback? The answer is all of the above and more. This game was by far a great game and will be discussed down the line of this article.
Before the game even started, the intensity was there days before game day. Players from each side throwing shots on social media patiently waiting to have their talk backed up on the field. A video was trending about a player from Hightower on a podcast. That player was Dailon Ellis. He stated words about the upcoming game that could have possibly added more fuel to the Bulldogs fiery mindset.
Now about the game, by the first quarter the crowd knew this would be a good one. The Bulldogs and Hurricanes were going back and forth until late 3rd quarter when Blake Thomas threw a pick 6 with 6 minutes and 46 seconds remaining. The score is now 31-20. Despite the score, head Coach Harrsion did not click the panic mode button. The Bulldogs drove all the way down the field and reached the end zone with a touchdown catch from senior Tight End Kordell Rodgers. The game now depended on the Bulldogs stud defense. With one team under pressure to put the game away and the other not allowing that to happen, this possession was one for the books. The Hurricanes threw three incompletions in a row that led to a crucial 4th down. On 4th down, Hightower fumbled the ball, having the whole crowd roar. It was now up to Bruce Swintion and his offense to win the game for the Bulldogs. Summer Creek drove up the field and made it to the 1 yard line. Who else to give the ball to than star running back Lloyd Avant? As the crowd went silent in focus to see if Summer Creek would make it in the endzone, Avant punched it in, leaving the Hurricanes in shock, slowly realizing their long playoff run had come to an end. During the celebrations, physical altercations occurred, involving quarterback Blake Thomas. It was clear to see that the Hurricanes were frustrated at the fact the Bulldogs turned the game around in such a short amount of time. With that being resolved and players back to the sideline, the Bulldogs kicked the ball leaving no time for the Hurricanes to make a play. Because of the time, the Hurricanes weren’t able to run a play, leaving the whole Summer Creek side ecstatic when the clock hit 0:00.
The star players of this game for the Bulldogs were Lloyd Avant, Kordell Rodgers, and Kyran Duhon. Although it was a team effort, these are the three that stood out the most. Lloyd Avant had 139 yards with 3 touchdowns for Summer Creek. Kordell Rodgers had 94 yards on 7 catches with a touchdown. Kyran Duhon was all over the field, making tackles and sacks, leaving a mark on Hightower. The Bulldogs will now be advancing to round 5 to play against the 12-1 Cibolo Steele after their win over Dripping Springs. This game will be held in Waco on the Baylor Bears home turf. The winner will advance to the Division 2 state Championship in Dallas. Are you ready?
