Summer Creeks Architecture Program and Tiny House Organization have gained many new faces this new year, including new architecture committee officers for the 2024- 2025 school year and a new architecture teacher and Tiny House adviser, Mr. Martinez. The students and Mr Martinez positions include leading and preserving the tiny house organization that makes tiny homes for unhoused veterans.
“I’m really excited to talk more, be more outgoing and also just connect more with people and also just to have a bigger leadership position because I haven’t really had the opportunity to have that.” sophomore and vice president Angelina Charian said.
As the committee officers settle into their future leadership positions, they are also getting used to having a new teacher in the classroom.
“I thought it was going to be different, but Mr. Martinez is a really good teacher,” sophomore Jessica Castro said. “He talks to us a lot and he connects with us already kind of on a personal level.”
Martinez has only been at Summer Creek for a few months, but already has formed a bond and gained the respect of many students, and it appears that the feelings are reciprocated.
“The students have made it much easier for me to transition from where I was at middle school, here to high school, in this new teaching environment,” Martinez said. “So, honestly, if it was anything, anybody that made it easier, it was the students. “
Mr. Martinez spent 20 years in the construction field and home development then spent time at Woodcreek middle school as a US history teacher before making his way to Summer Creek. His background in construction and education combined with his deep love of architecture made him a perfect fit for the program.
“From being in construction to being a teacher. It’s all coming together. And I’m truly enjoying this position and enjoying being here at Summer creek” said Martinez.
