Defensive back Brandon Jones, also known as “B. Jones,” was named Houston Player of the Week after recording two interceptions for touchdowns against Shadow Creek. Jones would go on to record two more interceptions against C.E. King for touchdowns. Those touchdowns along with his 12 total tackles would earn him his second Houston Player of the Week this season.
“I was very excited when I found out that I was Athlete of the week for both weeks,” Jones said. “I would like to give thanks to my lord and savior Jesus Christ. Also to my coaches and teammates as well.”
While on his final senior lap, Jones’ football journey started when he was just four years old. Texas Footwork Trainer Darren Hendricks has been there to see a huge part of his growth.
“All I can say is it’s a movie,” Hendricks said about Jones’ little league days. “This kid has always been an underdog and had a huge chip on his shoulder. What you see at 18 is the same thing he has been showing since he was seven when I met him in little league. Brandon would finish the game with 11 and 12 tackles a game and then go spend an hour at the field catching with his dad. We would watch films as a team at eight years old and he always had questions. Brandon is always the first and last at the gym and leads naturally when he is in a team environment. He is basically cut from the old cloth legends such as Ed Reed, Ronnie Lott, Rodney Harrison, Ryan Clark and Bob Sanders. That’s where he belongs.”
Not every football player can naturally lead a team with leadership traits. Aware that his skills at being a leader is one of the many reasons why local younger kids look up to him, Jones’ expresses to them what it takes to get accolades such as Houston Player of the Week.
“It’ll take real focus and discipline to wake up and choose to be your best self day in and day out,” Jones said. “Try to be a better version of yourself from the day before and keep God first.”
Summer Creek is rooting for Jones to help lead the Bulldogs to another state championship attempt. They currently sit at 6-1 coming off a 81-6 victory against Goose Creek Memorial. There are only three more games left until win or go home begins and it doesn’t seem like Jones wants to end his last lap soon.
