After four seasons of high school soccer, senior Sohana Spencer reached 100 goals in her career in the women’s varsity home game against Humble on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
“I’m feeling good, it was a really big accomplishment. I’ve been waiting to do that for a long time so I’m really happy,” she said.
With her overall score last year ending in the high 80s, she knew that her last high school season would be the time to complete her goal.
“I knew I was gonna get 100 this season. I just really focused on my shots and tried to work on shooting quicker and things like that,” she said.
To hone her skills for this season, she practiced her shooting technique specifically to make it as flawless as possible.
“I’ve practiced a lot of the technical side of shooting, a lot of different things go into it,” she said. “Honestly it’s just a lot of repetition, gotta keep practicing.”
An important part of her technique was the power behind her shots, so it took a lot of focus in her time training.
“For a long time, I had a really hard time getting power behind the ball so that’s something I’ve really focused on working on and using my strength,” she said. “You don’t need to be the strongest player out there to put a lot of power behind the ball, most of it is just the way you shoot it.”
Spencer doesn’t see the accomplishment as a time to slow down; it’s an opportunity to keep going further.
“It’s another superlative or achievement that I can put under my belt and it’s just more motivation to keep going and get more things like that,” she said.
At the end of the day though, she has two people to really thank for her success in everything she does.
“My parents really push me and motivate me all the time, they’re definitely my support system. Each day and every time I play, I want to play to make them proud,” she said. “All the hours they spend taking me to practices and paying for different clubs and things for me to play for and pay for equipment. The time and energy they put in and making it worth it for them.”
