Drugs are normalized within our community, especially towards the younger generation, through songs, movies, and social media. Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to stopping the normalization of drugs and encouraging students to be drug-free.
“The importance of Red Ribbon week is to spread awareness about drug use and substance abuse, mainly towards younger audiences,” senior Angelina Cherian said.
Red Ribbon Week is a national concept that all age groups participate in. Our school has chosen to contribute by having the students participate in dress-up days throughout the week: Neon Day, Denim Day, Red Out, Camo Day, and Halloween.
StuCo puts a lot of thought into the days. Cherian explains that the meaning of Neon Day is to shine a light in the dark. Denim Day means to be a “Jeanus” by using your brain to turn away from drugs, and Camo Day means to hide yourself from bad influences. Lastly, Halloween means to scare away the bad substances. Each theme has its creative meaning to fight off drug use.
“Red out is my favorite theme because, despite it being simple, it still holds such a strong meaning towards me,” Cherian said.
Many feel that we are at a stage in life where things are more impressionable on our mind and body. Drugs, for example, have been known to have horrible effects on your physical and mental health.
“I have a real strong feeling about drugs, I think those substances mess with the chemistry of your brain and your ability to make good choices,” Student Council teacher Mrs.Lopez said.
